on october 15th and 16th home this year’s festival will take place over a full weekend – 15th and 16th october, again at the royal seven stars hotel. we are delighted that two of the uk’s leading authors and illustrators will be taking part – nick sharratt, who has family connections with totnes, and dartmoor-based philip reeve. there are 11 events, featuring 15 authors and illustrators. the range of books is broader in this the second running of turn the page. we hope to appeal to even more children and their families, from pre-schoolers up to 10 and 11 year olds. we will have picture books, funny books, non-fiction, poetry, illustrated books for older children, and two rising stars who write for 9–11 years olds. download the programme here authors and illustrators taking part philip reeve and illustrator sarah mcintyre will be performing a show based on their new book ‘jinks and o’hare: funfair repair’ . nick sharratt ’s event will include his recently published first novel for children, ‘the cat and the king’ , as well as the popular ‘shark in the park’ series for younger readers. nicola davies and petr horacek will launch their brand new ‘a first book of animals’ with a surprise visit from feathered friends. katherine woodfine and ross montgomery ’s events will be based on their latest books, aimed at 10 and 11 year olds – ‘the mystery of the jewelled moth’ and ‘perijee and me’ – both of which have had wonderful reviews. north devon-based claire barker ’s event will centre on her popular ‘ knitbone pepper’ series, the third of which has just come out. knife and packer , winners of a prize at this year’s inaugural lollie (lots of laughs) awards for funny books, will make you and your children laugh with live drawing and readings from ‘badly drawn beth’ . josh lacey will focus on his popular ‘dragonsitter’ series, and john dougherty and tom morgan jones will perform funny poems, draw and even play the guitar as they bring alive their illustrated poetry book ‘dinosaurs and dinner ladies’ . exciting illustrator lucy letherland will encourage children to draw in an event linked to her ‘a miniature world of adventures’ . finally, following on from her sell-out event last year, we are thrilled that falmouth-based rebecca cobb is coming back to charm us again with another interactive show, based on new work. partners once again, we are working with the totnes library and the totnes bookshop . this year we have added two sets of events, to be held at the library, in the run-up to the main festival. on saturday 8th october, award-winning totnes author peter bently will hold the local launch of his halloween-themed new book potion commotion. festival books will also be previewed by our wonderful totnes librarians. on wednesday 12th october, storyteller vanessa wolf will work her magic on pre-school children, based on the wonderful picture book five minutes peace by jill murphy. the bookshop will again be selling books at all events, with discounts for ticket holders. school events extra sponsors this year means there will be events by festival authors in the three local primary schools : st john’s, dartington, and the grove. and plymouth-based plessey semiconductors has increased its sponsorship to support a big event for school children in its home town organised by plymouth library services: nick sharratt will be on at the guildhall. tickets we have kept ticket prices as low as possible and are again offering morning or afternoon session passes to encourage you to come enjoy more events. all children need tickets and must be accompanied by a ticket holding adult. our generous sponsors include: the royal seven stars hotel , plessey semiconductors , valeport , totnes rotary club, walker books , plymouth children’s book group , the curator café, kingfisher printers and ten new local sponsors. many thanks to all of them for making this festival possible. we hope it will be an inspiring few days for families and that visitors will enjoy the many delights of totnes. tickets on sale now , online and at the royal seven stars hotel reception and the totnes bookshop. the library will sell tickets for its events. parking if you are driving to totnes it may be busy this weekend so we suggest you allow plenty of time for parking. the long stay car park at longmarsh, on the bridgetown side of the river, always has spaces, and is a short walk from the seven stars. for further information, please email organiser nikki marsh on [email protected] every child loves to be told a story and to hold a book. reading, which is vital for access to learning, also gives much more, it nourishes the soul and provides joy, solace and understanding of the world around us. nothing can be more important than to offer all children the opportunity to develop a love of language and a desire to seek knowledge. eleanor cohen, mayor of totnes copyright © 2018 · turn the page totnes · website by blackpenpress.co.uk
